For The Love Of Philly: Nangellini

When you walk into Nangellini you are welcomed by the warmth of color.  The shop is bursting with it, if you were ever able to be inside of a rainbow I imagine that this is how it would look.  From the art on the walls to the color of Nancy's hair vibrancy rules in this shop.

Nangellini is my LYS.  I'm a bit biased when it comes to this store as I use to work here and it is two blocks from my apartment.  Located on South street between 9th and 8th street this store not only has wonderful yarn and all the knitting accessories one may need but you can also find fiber for spinning and felting along with finished items.  The Finished Items are mostly the work of the owner Nancy.  She is a free form fiber artist, with vibrant pink and sometimes purple or blue hair.  Nancy is a self proclaimed hat addict and by looking in the front of the shop you can see the evidence of her love of knitting and crocheting hats.  She also knits beautiful lace mandalas as wall hangings that are hung through out her shop.

Nangellini
Nangellini specializes in unique yarn.  This means Nancy stocks luxury fibers, trendy, anything with sparkle, recycled sari silks, banana fiber, and tons of other fabulous yarn.  She stocks one of my favorite company's yarn Mirasol.  If you are looking for a unique gift for a knitter of someone who thinks outside of the box you should check out this fab shop on South St.

You can check out Nangellini online or on Facebook.

Finished!

The mittens and hat are completed! Now I just need to weave in the ends and type up the pattern. I think a photo shoot with Simon is in order on Sunday.

I plan on having the pattern done on Sunday and the mitts and hat to Nancy no later that Tuesday. The only reason I would need to keep the hat and mitts till then would be to block the hat. I will have both patterns posted in my etsy shop as separate patterns as well as a set. The set will also be free from Nangellini with purchase of a hank of Nancy's Hair hand dyed yarn.

Nagellini Project

Here is the swatch and ball of Nancy's Hair (all the color with our the commitment). I've finished the hat and started on the mittens last night and I am whizzing though them. I plan to have the set of patterns knit and finished by the end of the week. If I keep knitting like I have been I should be done with the mitts by Friday.

The swatch in the picture looks a little wired because it is two swatches in one. I started with a US 4 needle and then switch to a US 6 needle for the second half of the swatch. There is a garter stitch ridge in between the two swatches and four yarn overs in one so I know it was knit with the US 4 and six yarn overs in the second half so I know it was worked with a US 6. I tend to swatch like this a lot, because that way I can see how the yarn knits up with different needles or sometimes with different stitches, and I can compare with out rummaging around for a bunch of different square swatches.

Recycled Sari Scarf

I finished another item for my etsy shop. This one is different to what I've listed before, and is a scarf knit from recycled sari silk yarn from Nepal. It came out beautiful and I have more pictures of it at Blue Betty.

Here's one that's not up in the shop.

I love this yarn it a fair trade yarn that's handspun by a womans co-op in Nepal. The proceeds from this yarn is used to send their children to school. It's also good for the enviroment because the fibers come from the salvage from the sari manufacturers in India. These fibers use to get thrown out before, but now they are made in to a beautiful yarn.

If your in the Philly area Nangellini on South St carries this yarn, or you can order it and learn more at www.recycledsilk.com. The same woman's co-op also spins Banana Silk which is a rayon made from the leaves of the banana tree.
